The story of plastic

Plastics are most widely used materials in the world because of their durability and flexibility. They surround us daily but do not always serve the purpose they were originally created for. With worldwide plastic production reaching 300 million tonnes annually, the accumulation of plastic waste has become a fast-growing global problem. Over the last 10 years we have produced more plastic than during the whole of the last century.

The problem is recognised, however, finding solutions to minimise plastic waste is a challenge. Landfilling and incineration are two of the three options to do that, but they also create a number of negative, long-lasting side effects to our health and the environment and are not as effective as we would like them to be. At the same time, incineration is non-reversible and results in the release of carbon dioxide and other air pollutants.

The third and best possibility to reduce the amount of plastic waste in the world is recycling. However, when compared to other materials like glass and metal, plastic polymers require greater processing to be recycled.

Our story

Elegro technology was founded in 2009 with the ambition to build a dynamic recycling and production company that utilizes post-consumer waste. The inspiration to create such a company was drawn from the now global movement Let’s Do It! that began in Estonia in 2008 when 50,000 people joined forces to clean up the whole country in just five hours.

After the initial investment in our innovative state of the art technology, the company started to investigate the possibilities to develop processing solutions for mixed waste plastics and determine products that could be manufactured from them.

2011 saw the company move away from the initial technology constraints to focus on its own direction and technical ambitions. The first major project of Elegro Technology’s development was the manufacturing and delivery of noise reduction screening along Estonian motorways. 2014 bought further extended enhancements to the ELEGRO core technology and the arrival of ELEGRO decking and fencing systems.

The company now known as Elegro Technology has developed its business to encompass a significant collection of raw materials, a processing and distribution centre along with an extrusion plant with over 22,000 tonnes of capacity supported by both fabrication and retail outlets.

The group is looking to extend its technology base further to other products and markets whilst delivering an innovative, green, high quality range of construction and outdoor living products to the global market.

Our technology

We have created a unique technology and, as a result, we are able to change the world with it. Elegro technology focuses on recycling mixed plastic generated by households.

During the first stage of production, plastic packaging is transformed into suitable feedstock. During the second stage of production, extrusion method is used to produce a variety of plastic profiles. These profiles are widely usable in severe and resistance-demanding conditions.

Through Elegro patented technology, plastic waste gets a new life and can be reused repeatedly. Elegro technology does not use water during the process, therefore, the technology is waste-free – all raw material is reused. Moreover, the value of the material increases during the recycling process and products get an exclusive look. In ELEGRO products, primary material is covered by weatherproof decors by using special heat treatments processes. As a result, Elegro Technology can provide a product that is resistant to any weather conditions.
